New ‘Doctor Who’ title sequence inspired by fan video

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed that the inspiration for the show’s new title sequence came from a fan-made clip on YouTube.

Leeds-based motion graphics professional Billy Hanshaw created a mock version of a new title sequence for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor last year and posted it on his YouTube channel.

The video has received over 700,000 views since it went online in September 2013.

Steven Moffat revealed in New York this week: “Hanshaw created this title sequence, put it up on YouTube. I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I’d seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, okay, we’re going to do that one.”

Moffat then commissioned Hanshaw to work with BBC Wales on Series 8’s new title sequence.

It’s not identical, just for the record. There’s no Seal of Rassilon, no pocket watch and though Capaldi’s face does appear in the sequence it’s more of a “Mr Angry Eyes” thing than the one used here. But this one is fantastic and I’m glad to hear about Moffat interacting with a fan that doesn’t end in him getting annoyed.

Has the arrangement of the song changed again?

      • Kyle Rose

        Yes it has.

    • Darth TARDIS.

      What about music wise?

A piece being inspired does not mean identical. just thought I’d say that for the record.

    • GM52246

Right, but the important thing is they hired the guy who created the original piece do to the professional one, which is really something.

I like it! Got a premier party all set & can’t wait!

Really don’t like it. it breaks from the 50 year DW tradition of the title sequence taking place in the time vortex, and furthermore it heavily involves a prop that we’ve seen in 1 episode from 5 seasons ago. Totally redundant, even if they decided to use it again. We don’t even see the Sonic Screwdriver in the title sequence, why should a random stopwatch be thrown in? Just use the series 7 intro but with Peter’s face on it, series 7’s intro seemed to fit Capaldi much more, along with the new TARDIS design

It does actually feature a Time Vortex… Just to let you know. It also isn’t a total copy of this video – there’s no Seal of Rassilon, the cogs are different and the ending has a wisping Cyan Time Vortex with planets spinning around it and Capaldi eyes. As far as I’ve seen, the beginning and end of the title sequence transitions in and out with the before and after footage in a cloudy haze.

I personally like this fan made one, so I’m kind of excited to see what its inspired.

I love this bit by BIlly Hanshaw. It’s refreshing, gorgeous and very nicely done. I’ve heard that the end product is or may be a bit different but hey, if it’s inspired by a fan’s work, that’s something special.

    I see you’ve changed the opening…. I don’t like it….
