Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall has revealed that the show was not “devised as a big ITV returning banker”, casting doubt upon the chance of a second series.

Currently airing at 9pm on Monday nights on ITV, the eight-part drama series stars David Tennant (Doctor Who), Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure and Jodie Whittaker, and explores what happens to a small community in Dorset when it suddenly becomes the focus of a police investigation, following the tragic and mysterious death of an eleven year old boy under the glare of the media spotlight.

Speaking exclusively to CultBox, the Torchwood writer explained: “[Broadchurch is] not set up as a returning franchise, it’s an 8 part serial. It was always devised like that, and…you’re just going to have to see what happens in the remaining episodes to be honest!”

He added: “It was devised as one story, that’s all I’m going to say. Nothing about it was devised as a big ITV returning banker. So the success of it so far has taken us by surprise – let’s just see where it goes!”
