BBC One orders ‘Hospital People’ series following ‘Comedy Playhouse’ pilot

Six half-hour episodes of sitcom Hospital People have been commissioned by BBC One.

Written and created by Tom Binns and Matt Morgan, an initial pilot aired on BBC One in February this year as part of the reinstated Comedy Playhouse strand.

Hospital People sees co-creator Tom Binns plays a raft of characters living their daily lives set in a fictional hospital.

BBC Comedy’s Alex Moody commented: “We’re delighted to be working with the exceptionally talented Tom Binns. He’s a brilliant multi-character performer and we can’t wait to introduce BBC One viewers to each and every one of his Hospital People.”

Executive producer Ash Atalla added: “We’re really happy about our first BBC One series commission. Roughcut TV is all grown up and delighted to be making a show for Britain’s most prestigious channel. Hospital People is a testament to our talented team. And now we go to work to make this series the very best it can be.”

The official synopsis reads: “Hospitals are mainly about the medical staff and the patients but what about the other inhabitants? Hospital People follows the lives of Brimlington hospital’s inept DJ Ivan Brackenbury, its ambitious manger, Susan Mitchell, the overenthusiastic hospital chaplain Father Kenny and serial hypochondriac patient, Terry Boyle. The new series will show how big decisions affect the little people, and raises the question – should half of these people even be in a hospital anyway?”

Hospital People will air on BBC One in 2017.
