‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ writer: Luke would have been gay

Speaking on the audio commentary for Series 4’s ‘Death of the Doctor’, which appears on next month’s Special Edition DVD release of classic Doctor Who story ‘The Green Death’, Davies commented: “Tommy [Knight, who played Luke] refers to his friend Sanjay. Now had we continued, Sanjay would have been Luke’s boyfriend. Because [CBBC] wanted to have – I’ve never said this in any interview anywhere – wanted us to have a gay character on children’s BBC. Just a normal gay character.”

The final episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’, aired on CBBC in 2011 following the death of star Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith.
