‘Doctor Who’ storyboards show Christopher Eccleston in 50th anniversary ep

A storyboard artist who worked on Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special has unveiled early storyboards featuring the Ninth Doctor.

As has been widely reported before, Steven Moffat originally approached Christopher Eccleston to be in ‘The Day of the Doctor’ but he declined.

‘The Day of the Doctor’ aired on Saturday 23 November 2013 and featured the return of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, with John Hurt’s War Doctor introduced to fill the role left vacant by the Ninth Doctor.

Now, Andrew Wildman – comic creator, animator, TV producer and and storyboard creator – has released a collection of storyboards, including his work on ‘The Day of the Doctor’ and ‘Nightmare in Silver’.

Bleeding Cool picked up a copy at the Geek Comic Con and has shared some of the images online.

Wildman introduces his work on ‘The Day of the Doctor’, commenting: “My run on the show spanned three Christmas specials and most of Matt [Smith]’s final season including his ‘regeneration’. That was me pretty much done other than the huge privilege of being asked to work – albeit in a small way – on the 50th Anniversary special.”

He revealed: “There were going to be three Doctors in this one. The current, 11th Doctor and the previous two. Ok, so it didn’t quite work out that way in the end as we all know. Contracts are an odd thing and in the end show runner and writer supreme, Steven Moffat, had to come up with something… slightly different. At my time of working on the show however it was the three ‘modern age’ Doctors and the current assistant, Clara.”

The storyboards also reveal that a young girl was originally planned to represent The Moment before Billie Piper took the role.

Steven Moffat previously explained why the regeneration of John Hurt’s Doctor into Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor was cut short in the episode.
