8 things we want to see in ‘Doctor Who’ Season 10

Let’s consider some of the things we hope to see in the next season of Doctor Who

A new version of the theme tune

Doctor Who titles 2014

Composer Murray Gold has overseen several new arrangements of the Doctor Who theme since the show’s revival in 2005, the most recent of which coincided with the launch of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor in ‘Deep Breath’.

To reflect the start of a new era with the introduction of Season 10’s new companion, perhaps a new spin on the theme tune is required?

Keep the brilliant current title sequence though!

The return of some classic characters

Doctor Who Paul McGann Eighth Doctor

With Peter Capaldi now firmly established in his role, could his third season be the perfect time for him to encounter a past Doctor? Paul McGann has stated that he’s up for another return and we’re sure that Capaldi’s fellow super-fan David Tennant wouldn’t take much persuading, but it might be too soon for Ten after ‘The Day of the Doctor’.

I’d personally like to see the Sixth Doctor take on Capaldi (a throwaway line about how different Colin Baker looks is all that’d be needed really). The most arrogant of Doctors both arguing about who should control the TARDIS – no doubt with some cutting remarks about their respective wardrobe choices.

If Season 10 was to have the traditional Doctor-lite episode, why not use this as an opportunity to bring back a familiar face?

Doctor Who Susan

For example, Peter Capaldi has said he would like The Doctor to reunite with Susan, and Carole Ann Ford is keen, but would Susan take to her grandfather again?

With Season 10 being Steven Moffat’s final year, he could perhaps give some of his own creations a final send-off too, with returns for the likes of the Paternoster Gang, Captain Jack Harkness and the new UNIT crew.

A new Doctor

Doctor Who Heaven Sent Peter Capaldi Twelfth

Before you start lighting pitchforks, Peter Capaldi has already stated that the next season may well be his final year as the Doctor. And although it feels like early days still, a run of three seasons has been standard for most Doctors since Tom Baker’s epic seven-year stretch.

Also, even the most ardent fans of Matt Smith and David Tennant would admit that the episodes towards the very end of their runs were not their strongest and, as a fan himself, Capaldi must be anxious about outstaying his welcome.

But what sort of Doctor should Capaldi’s be in Season 10? I prefer Capaldi’s light-hearted approach to the Doctor, as seen in ‘The Husbands of River Song’, as opposed to the edgy, cold and apparently uncaring side.

Also, realistically, his Doctor in Season 10 has got to be someone that a new companion actually wants to spend time with. The Twelfth Doctor got lucky with Clara as she still had a massive crush on his previous regeneration and put up with him in Season 8.

Capaldi has a wide range as an actor, so he can turn any words or actions into gold dust. That iconic speech in ‘The Zygon Inverson’ was made for Capaldi’s Doctor and we can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next.

But the Twelfth Doctor is very much the voice of Steven Moffat and new showrunner Chris Chibnall might well wish to introduce a new Doctor to usher in his era in 2018.
