‘In the Club’ Season 1 episode guide

Starring Hermione Norris, Tara Fitzgerald, Jill Halfpenny and Katherine Parkinson, In the Club is BBC One’s new drama from Fat Friends creator Kay Mellor.

Also starring Will Mellor, Jonathan Kerrigan, Sacha Dhawan and newcomer Hannah Midgley, the six-part series tells the story of a seemingly straightforward antenatal group, where secrets and lies bubbling beneath the surface threaten each of the new families. In sharing the most intimate of experiences, they are shown how dreams can change in an instant and form a life-long bond and friendship.

Episode 1

Tuesday 5 August 2014, 9pm

At the local Parentcraft class six pregnant women and their partners are preparing for the arrival of their babies.

Housewife Diane (Jill Halfpenny), schoolgirl Rosie (Hannah Midgley), newlywed Jasmin (Taj Atwal), businesswoman Roanna (Hermione Norris) midwife Vicky (Christine Bottomley) and blog writer and teaching assistant Kim (Katherine Parkinson) each have their own issues to deal with.

Diane and husband Rick (Will Mellor) are expecting their ‘miracle child’ having been told they would never conceive. But a late scan reveals more than they bargained for – and with mounting pressure on unemployed Rick to provide for his family, drastic measures are taken.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Rosie is hiding her pregnancy from everyone – her dad, the school and even her baby’s mystery father. Alone and frightened she turns to Kim’s pregnancy blog for support. But with her waistband fit to burst, she won’t be able to keep her secret forever…

 

Episode 2

With her husband on the run from the police, Diane (Jill Halfpenny) struggles to cope with the consequences of Rick’s (Will Mellor) actions. Upset and alone, she turns to Roanna (Hermione Norris) for support. But is the stress is causing her Braxton Hicks to return…or are the twinges more than just practice labour?

Unknown to Diane, Rick is hiding out at Jasmin (Taj Atwal) and Dev’s (Sacha Dhawan) house. But when the police turn up, Jasmin is shocked to learn the real reason Rick is there. With no way to turn, Rick is pushed to the edge in more ways than one.

In the aftermath of Rosie’s (Hannah Midgley) dad’s accident, Kim (Katherine Parkinson) feels increasingly responsible for her. But when social services come to talk to Rosie about her baby’s future, Kim’s caring nature is pushed to its limit.

 

Episode 3

When Roanna’s ex-husband cancels her credit cards, her and Simon’s (Luke Thompson) financial future comes into question. With their baby due any day, Roanna (Hermione Norris) suggests going to Simon’s parents for help. But Roanna’s never actually met them and Simon seems strangely reluctant.

Jasmin (Taj Atwal) has an unwelcome visitor and with a question mark looming over her due date, it causes her blood pressure to rise even further.

Rosie’s (Hannah Midgley) dad is still in hospital and social services plan to take her to a Mother and Baby Hostel. But when Rosie threatens to run away with her baby if she’s made to go to the hostel, Kim (Katherine Parkinson) struggles to find a happy solution.

 

Episode 4

With Kim (Katherine Parkinson), Rosie (Hannah Midgley) and baby Dinah staying at Neil’s (Jonathan Kerrigan) flat, Kim and Neil struggle to ignore their feelings for each other and their secret threatens to bubble to the surface.

There’s a shock for Rosie when she visits her dad in hospital to tell him he’s a grandad which means her future looks more uncertain than ever. With her own baby’s arrival looming, Vicky (Christine Bottomley) gives Dr Bellingham (Brendan Patricks) an ultimatum.

Elsewhere in the hospital Jasmin (Taj Atwal) is unhappy when she’s told they might have to induce her labour and confides in Vicky about her ‘honeymoon’ baby.

Roanna (Hermione Norris) struggles with becoming a new mum all over again and the baby blues threaten to eclipse the joy of baby Sonny’s arrival.

Meanwhile, baby Hope is suffering from jaundice and Diane (Jill Halfpenny) is torn between being in hospital for Hope and taking care of her family at home.

 

Episode 5

Tuesday 2 September 2014, 9pm

Jasmin (Taj Atwal) is furious as Dr Bellingham (Brendan Patricks) induces her labour early. Are her paternity worries about to be answered once and for all? Will the baby be white and will her marriage survive if it is? Things go from bad to worse when she discovers Jack (Will Tudor) is in the hospital following his fight with Dev (Sacha Dhawan).

Dr Bellingham is unhappy with Vicky (Christine Bottomley) when their relationship accidently becomes public knowledge.

Roanna (Hermione Norris) and Simon (Luke Thompson) move into his parents’ house and Roanna feels torn when she visits her daughter Katie (Poppy Lee Friar).

The relationship between Susie (Tara Fitzgerald), Kim (Katherine Parkinson) and Neil (Jonathan Kerrigan) is strained in the aftermath of Rosie’s (Hannah Midgley) revelation that Jude (Danny Breeze) is the father. Kim tries to mend the fractured family.

Meanwhile, an anxious Diane (Jill Halfpenny) and Rick (Will Mellor) are optimistic as Baby Hope is taken off the ventilator – but will she be able to breathe on her own?

 

Episode 6

A twinge in Vicky’s (Christine Bottomley) abdomen causes panic when her Parentcraft friends think she’s in labour. But all is not as it seems, and Dr Bellingham (Brendan Patricks) is forced to confront his feelings for Vicky. When he confesses a long held secret, Vicky questions whether she’ll be able to forgive him.

Tensions build as Kim (Katherine Parkinson) and Susie (Tara Fitzgerald) try to make their relationship work. With Jude (Danny Breeze), Rosie (Hannah Midgley) and baby Dinah living together at Neil’s (Jonathan Kerrigan) flat, things get even more complicated.

When Simon (Luke Thompson) throws a surprise party for Roanna (Hermione Norris) it puts more strains on her relationship with his parents.

Jasmin (Taj Atwal) and Dev (Sacha Dhawan) struggle with the challenges of parenthood and their tiredness causes them to make mistakes.

Meanwhile, Diane (Jill Halfpenny) and Rick (Will Mellor) are preparing to finally take baby Hope home –  but will things go smoothly? Rick’s distracted by his impending court hearing – will he be able to be there to watch his kids grow up?
