‘Thunderbirds: The Vault’ book review: Rich in detail and analysis

Posted Filed under

Much like when Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary a couple of years ago, there’s been a cascade of new merchandise to celebrate Gerry Anderson’s classic creation reaching its half centenary.

However, if you should choose to only invest in one such product, then Marcus Hearn’s Thunderbirds: The Vault is the one to go for.

Much like Hearn’s Doctor Who: The Vault from 2013, this new publication is a treasure trove of information, detailing the beginnings of Anderson’s career in television right through to the creation of Thunderbirds, before discussing in great detail the production of the show’s 32 episodes and two feature films, weaving in new and insightful interviews with key cast and crew, as well as other various sound-bites and interview snippets from over the years.

Thunderbirds Vault

It’s a weighty and insightful read, concise and well structured, with refreshing in-depth discussions of subjects such as composer Barry Gray’s music and the show’s predictions of the future weaved in for good measure. Hearn even offers his own critical commentary on various key episodes at times, which won’t always be in line with the reader’s personal opinion, but is welcome nonetheless, especially since it’s the intelligent and well-informed Hearn doing the critiquing.

The real highlight though is the collection of production snapshots and merchandise images that feature on every page. Highlighting production practices, models, studio work and rare toys, games and comics released alongside the series, these images are beautiful to behold, interesting and informative in equal measure.

If you are or know anyone to be a huge fan of Thunderbirds and Gerry Anderson, then you should certainly pick up a copy. Rich in detail and analysis, and oozing with a wealth of information, Thunderbirds: The Vault is a perfect companion to celebrate 50 years of International Rescue!
