Star Trek Enterprise: writer admits that terrible series finale was a mistake

Some shows have amazing final episodes. Others? Less so. And up there in the league of WTF conclusions to television shows is Star Trek Enterprise. The show’s fourth and final season came to a close in 2005, with an episode that remains infamous to this day.

Spoilers kick in from here.

In that finale, we get Star Trek: The Next Generation alumni Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis and Jeffrey Combs (with Brent Spiner on voicing duties) viewed through a holodeck. And the episode, intended as a farewell gift to Star Trek fans, spent the finale focusing on Next Generation characters rather than rounding off Enterprise. It did not go down well.

“I thought it was the coolest thing ever when we were writing it”, writer Brannon Braga has now told Trek Movie, “the idea of doing a ‘lost episode’ of The Next Generation, but they’re going to the holodeck to look back at Enterprise, Rick [Berman, co-showrunner with Braga] and I thought was a great sendoff to Star Trek [the franchise as it existed in 2005], and it didn’t work out so well”

“It was a kind of a slap in the face to the Enterprise actors”, he added. “I heard it from everybody, it was the only time Scott Bakula was ever mean to me. I regret it”.
