Production has started on a new TV series based on the popular Horrible Science children’s books.

The ten-part series is produced by Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller’s production company, Toff, and aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 12.

Featuring “on-screen chaos, blazing backstage rows and gooey slapstick” with “comedy sketches, experiments, and songs”, Horrible Science sees a lovable family of characters trying to put on a spectacular science show.

Ben Miller, who will also star in the show, commented: “I’ve loved science ever since I was a kid, and making Horrible Science has been a dream come true. The utterly brilliant Horrible Science books have given us a wealth of characters, jokes, and – as they would put it – “squishy bits” to plunder, and we haven’t held back.  This is the perfect show to get kids and adults alike hooked on science.”

ITV commissioner Jamila Metran added: “We are delighted that CITV will be the home of Horrible Science.  Gruesome, funny and topical, Toff have created a fantastic series that will take our viewers on an unforgettable and entertaining voyage of scientific discovery!”

The cast includes stand-up comedian Chris Martin, Letty Butler (Wolf Blood), Tom Bell (Wizards vs Aliens), Eleanor Lawrence (Phoneshop), Jason Forbes (Pompidou) and Susan Wokoma (Uncle).

Marcus Garvey, David Armand and Alexander Armstrong will also guest star.

Horrible Science is directed by Simon Gibney (Horrible Histories).
