'Doctor Who': Series 7 filming start date confirmed

The new series of Doctor Who will begin filming on Monday 20th February, the show's official website has announced.

Showrunner Steven Moffat has promised "the biggest, the best, and most ambitious season we've ever made", and that monsters old and new will be making an appearance.

Series 7 will see the departure of Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams) midway through the series. But the Time Lord won't be without a companion for long, as he will then meet a new friend, "in the very last place he could ever have expected".

The new series also finds the show moving to the BBC's new Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, with the shoot's first episode being directed by Who newcomer Saul Metzstein. Metzstein's previous work includes the revamped Upstairs Downstairs and BBC Four's 2009 drama Micro Men.

The production team has been confirmed as Steven Moffat (Executive Producer and Lead Writer), Marcus Wilson (Producer), and The Fades producer Caroline Skinner (Executive Producer), who made her debut with 2011's Christmas special.
