Were you pleased with the success of Series 1? What sort of reaction have you had from fans in public?

“I’m delighted about it. There was always a bit of hype about it following Merlin on a Saturday night, but we were all really chuffed that it’s formed a fanbase of its own and that people liked it so much. I think people seemed to fall in love with the trio – me, Jack [Donnelly] and Mark [Addy] – which we really worked hard to nail.”

Are there any plans for the Atlantis cast to appear at Comic Con or any other conventions this year?

“We’re doing the Comic-Con in Wales and I have a feeling that we may go to the San Diego one, yeah. I think there’s possibilities of New York and London and Paris and places like that.”

Are you looking forward to seeing fans dressed up as you?

“I think it might be a bit weird! I’ve never done a Comic-Con before. Mark’s done once with Game of Thrones, but it’s all new to me.”

When do you start filming Series 2?

“We start in mid-March; we start a bit earlier this year so that they have enough time to get it all ready. We’re doing a couple of stints abroad again.”

Is it going to air around the same time this autumn as Series 1 did last year?

“I’m assuming so, yeah.”

Can you give us any hints about what’s coming up for Pythagoras in Series 2?

“I actually have no idea! I haven’t seen any of the scripts yet, I’m assuming I’m going to get them in the next couples of weeks. They’ll have to send them soon! I know they’re really wanting to build on last season and up the ante a bit. I like when you have to see his knowledge and he has to solve complicated things, I think that’s a great characteristic of his.

“I also really enjoyed the ‘Furies’ episode, which was my storyline with my brother coming in. It was nice to have a storyline for Pythagoras to give the character a bit more depth. So hopefully they’ll be more episodes like that for me!”

Do you think Pythagoras might get a love interest, seeing as Jason has Ariadne and Hercules has Medusa…

“Yeah! I think that’d be fun to play. I would like to see who they’d pair him with.”

Would you like to see the student/mentor relationship with Robert Lindsay as Daedalus continue?

“Yeah, I know there were talks about Robert coming back, but our producers don’t give too much away. I’m hoping they’ll build more on that relationship, it was really interesting and I think we had a really cool chemistry.”

What was Robert like to work with?

“He was really fun to be around; he’s constantly playing with his character which sort of helped me in a way.”

Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps always had a five-year plan for Merlin; do you know if they have a similar masterplan for Atlantis?

“They definitely have a five year plan for it, for sure. Obviously the first season had to fit into its [post-Merlin] slot, but I know they’re really wanting to make it its own entity, so I think they’re going to be coming up with new things they’ve never done before. I know they have some big, big ideas for it! It does have a movie scale to it so I think they want to invest in that a bit more.”

How similar are you, Mark Addy and Jack Donnelly to your characters?

“I think the dynamic between the three of us is quite similar. We’re all in every day and we have such a good laugh, it feels like being at school sometimes. We have a similar relationship with each other. I ‘m not sure Jack is as heroic as Jason in real life, I’m not quite as clever as Pythagoras and Mark certainly isn’t as buffoonish as Hercules!”

You had some great guest stars in Series 1 – who would be your dream guest stars and which mythological characters would you like them to play?

“Robert Lindsay was brilliant, so I’d love him to come back. We’d love to have someone like Matt Smith come in. I know we were all wondering if they’re going to do the Icarus story at some point, he’d be brilliant as Icarus. And obviously anyone wants Olivia Colman in everything! I don’t think she’d come and do it though!”

Alice Troughton [director of four episodes in Series 1] has said we should ask you: What was the most interesting thing that happened in Morocco?

“I got the same question when we were on the Graham Norton radio show from our first assistant director who phoned in – I just can’t tell that story, it’s just so rude, I can’t tell it!

“Although there’s another story to do with a goat which was tied up next to me and became aroused as I was eating my lunch. It was really pretty disgusting and put me off my lunch. This poor goat was obviously having a hard time, so to speak. I just can’t tell you the other one, sorry!”
