Michelle Gomez confirms she’s leaving ‘Doctor Who’

The female incarnation of The Master will depart with Capaldi and Moffat after series 10.

I don’t think that many people would argue with our opinion that Michelle Gomez has been one of the highlights of Peter Capaldi’s reign as the Doctor. Watching the pair verbally joust across multiple episodes, and the sheer devilry she has bought to the classic Doctor Who role has, quite simply, been a joy. Which is why it’s with a heavy heart that we report on this scoop from Digital Spy that appeared this morning.

Yes, they have confirmed that there will be no more Missy after this series of the show wraps up. A revelation that’s come straight from the star herself.

“My guys, my lads, Missy’s men – they’re all moving on!” Gomez told the site, adding that “Steven writes so amazingly for me – it’s like he’s got my voice in his head, and I don’t know how that would be, moving forward.”

It also seems that her on-screen chemistry with Peter Capaldi has fed into her decision. “I don’t know how I’d feel about being The Master to any other Doctor,” she went on to say, “because I feel like I’m part of Peter’s time.”

We will, it appears, see Missy in this weekend episode, Extremis, and probably again before the end of Capaldi and Moffat’s last run. And of course, this is The Master, a character that’s come back more times than a boomerang – so there’s no guarantee we’ll never, ever see her again. Just ask John Simm, who will also be reprising his take on the role in this series.

Gomez, may not be totally averse to a similar shocking return at some later date, either. “I’m sure in a couple of years’ time, the urge to blow things up will just be too strong and Missy will come in guns blazing!”
