‘Downtown Abbey’ closes its gates, but fans will keep story going

On Christmas Day Downtown Abbey will open its ostentatious doors for a very last time.

The highly popular British TV period drama will conclude after six award-winning seasons.

Creator Julian Fellowes told GoldDerby.com in an interview that it was never meant to become a never-ending story: “Certainly, we didn’t want to go on and on and on and on. We wanted to leave while people were still sorry to see us go. And on that basic principle, (series) six seemed a pretty good number.”

The show revolves around the wealthy, aristocratic Crawley family and their servants living in Yorkshire in the early 20th century. It opens with the sinking of the Titanic and covers the period leading up to and following World War I, including plots about major and minor events of those years. The main focus, however, is on the personal lives of those both upstairs and downstairs.

The show has created an immense following all over the world and fans are refusing to say good bye to the Crawley family just yet. And they don’t have to as publishing content has become as easy as ever. Registering a domain and starting a blog, like here for example, is cheap – and you needn’t be particularly tech savvy either. Personal websites, liveblogs and fanfiction forums list a myriad of entries including alternative story arcs covering all major and minor characters of the series.

Some entries are just a few lines or a poem, others are short stories, while some are full-length, passably written spin-off novels.

The dedication and enthusiam of the fans turned writers will ensure that whoever longs for stories from the Abbey will be able to delve back into it, at least kind of.

But desperate fans can even hope for more. Earlier this year it was hinted that there might be a Downton Abbey movie. Recently Laura Carmichael, who plays Edith Crawley, has confirmed that talks to adapt the hit period drama for the big screen are underway.
