The biggest blockbusters of 2016 so far

This year had a lot of huge movies, collectively grossing over $7,000,000,000 in the US alone.

From 80’s reboots and action films, to family movies and comic book sequels, hundreds of movies filled the screens this year.

Check out a few of the biggest blockbusters of 2016 so far, and let us know what your favourite is!

 

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

The sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel grossed an incredible $873 million dollars on its $250 million dollar budget. Directly following on from Man of Steel, the story is based around the worlds struggle to accept Superman as their true hero, with some people considering him nothing more than a vigilante, and warning the rest of the world of how dangerous he really is. The film starred Henry Cavill as Superman, and Ben Affleck as his first foray into Gotham’s favourite knight.

 

X-Men Apocalypse

The 9th film in the X-Men franchise grossed over $534 million and stars Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy reprising their roles as Magneto and Charles Xavier respectively. The film follows super villain Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur and his four horsemen’s plans to destroy the earth.

 

Deadpool

Comic fans have been waiting a long time to see Deadpool brought to life on the silver screen. Seven years after being both teased and eventually disappointed with Wade Wilson’s appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds helped make the movie fans have been waiting for. Grossing an incredible $782.6 million dollars on only a $58 million dollar budget, it returned a whopping 13x its budget!

 

Ghostbusters

The controversial reboot of the 1984 classic starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the eponymous team. Staying faithful enough to the original story but with a modern enough spin, the team get together to save New York City from ghosts. The film also starred Chris Hemsworth in a supporting role, and also featured cameos from original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.

 

Captain America: Civil War

The most recent entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the highest grossing film of 2016 made an absolutely incredible $1.1 Billion dollars. Civil War was a critical and financial success, earning the title of 12th highest earning movie of all time. With the stars of the MCU such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannsson and Chris Hemsworth reprising their roles, it very quickly became the summer hit straight out of the gate. It follows the story of the gradual tension growing within the Avengers and the inevitable fallout. The film also introduces Black Panther, the new Spiderman and brings Ant-Man into his first time with the Avengers.
