13 of the best couples in ‘Doctor Who’

Since Doctor Who’s 2005 revival, love and relationships have become part of the drama like never before.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, CultBox runs down our top couplings…

Amy Pond and Rory Williams (2010 – 2012)

Doctor Who Amy Rory wedding

With the Eleventh Doctor crash-landing into her childhood, before returning to find her all grown up, it was no wonder that mild mannered nurse Rory measured himself against the Time Lord.

Joining Amy and the Doctor on their travels, Rory proved to be brave and reliable on countless occasions (particularly with his unfortunate habit of dying). Eventually it was Amy who sacrificed her life on board the TARDIS for a future with the man she loved, not being able to countenance life without him.

The Doctor and River Song (2008 – 2015)

Doctor Who The Wedding of River song

Trained to kill the Doctor from an early age, River Song (born Melody Pond) broke her conditioning and fell for the Time Lord. They enjoyed a riotous relationship, frequently meeting out of order and keeping track of their dates through her spoiler-filled diary.

In the end though, the romance was fated to end for River as it had begun for the Doctor, with her death saving all the people stored in the Library planet’s computer.

Clara Oswald and Danny Pink (2014)

Doctor who In the Forest of the Night Danny Clara

Troubled former soldier turned school teacher Danny Pink met his match in fellow teacher Clara Oswald. Despite a troubled introduction to her pal the Doctor, Danny went on to prove himself ably and assisted the time travellers on a number of occasions, including helping to disable a Skovox Blitzer with a nifty backflip and saving them from a tiger with a torch.

Allowing her access to the TARDIS’ telepathic circuits, the Doctor unwittingly brought Clara to see the young Danny at a children’s home when he was eight (and called ‘Rupert’). He later went on to introduce her to a Colonel Orson Pink, who appeared to be a descendant of her and Danny.

Sadly, their romance was cut short due to Danny’s tragic death when he was hit by a car in ‘Dark Water’. And that was the easy bit.

Donna Noble and Lee McAvoy (‘Forest of the Dead’)

Doctor Who Donna Lee

After her disastrous engagement to the duplicitous Lance, which almost ended in marriage, Donna finally found love with Lee. He was the perfect man for her, as due to a pronounced stutter he seemed happy to let her do all the talking.

Sadly, when they were rescued from the Library computer hard drive Donna assumed that Lee had been part of the simulation. Although he spotted her across the room, he did not manage to call out in time.
