5 of the coolest gadgets in film and TV

Posted Filed under

Smartphones. Smartwatches. iPads. They’re all pretty cool…but a laser watch? A cloak that turns you invisible? Now that’s cool.

Movies and television can sometimes spoil real life by depicting items on-screen that make us wish we had one, but until technology catches up with fantasy, we’ll just have to make do with what we have until we can hoverboard our way to work.

Though it’s tough to select just five, considering the countless options of incredibly amazing (albeit fictional) items shown on-screen, here are our picks for the coolest gadgets…

Invisibility Cloak in the Harry Potter films

“I just want to be seen at all hours of every day” – said no one ever. Even though Harry, Ron, and Hermione used an invisibility cloak to sneak into rooms they weren’t supposed to sneak into, like the library (how boring), a garment that makes you undetectable could be used for a wealth of reasons.

See your ex walking down the street? Hide behind the post box and throw on the invisibility cloak. Parents have guests in your house that you really don’t want to talk to, but you need to use the kitchen? Throw on the invisibility cloak.

Hoverboard in Back to the Future: Part II

Social media blew up on 21 October 2015, as this was the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown travelled to in the future, depicting a world with all sorts of weird and wonderful predictions, yet none more famous than the hoverboard.

This epic update to the humble skateboard is better for all sorts of reasons, namely…hovering. Perfect for when you need to evade a gang, cross a field of grass, or can’t manage an ‘ollie’ on a regular skateboard. Just be careful over water…

Laser Watch in GoldenEye

Many of today’s online watch retailers feature a great range of Rolex and Omega options, not so different to the ones seen in the James Bond films.

The Rolex featured in 1973’s Live and Let Die had great magnet and rope-cutting abilities, but the Omega featured in 1995’s GoldenEye is just that little bit cooler, featuring a laser that cuts can cut through metal. Although, one useful option for the watch could also be to remove impossibly firm jam lids.

Sonic Screwdriver in Doctor Who

Not only does it look incredibly cool, but this magical gadget has proven its worth on countless occasions: opening locks, disarming aliens, and incapacitating monsters.

It seems like a Sonic Screwdriver would be one of the most useful tools to have in your kitchen drawers, just beside the wooden spoon and bread knife.

Teleportation System in Star Trek

Finally, the use of a transporting machine would be ever-so-useful in real life. Kirk and Spock have avoided many troubles and dilemmas by teleporting from one place to another in space.

However, it’s likely most people nowadays would use it to simply avoid packed trains and airport queues.
